When I was in college, I had my first opportunity to help an organization using design. I was working with a local food pantry in St. Louis to create a marketing campaign. The project was small, it required designing a print piece and 2 social media posts. After working alongside the organization as the project was coming to a close, I could see how well our ideas worked promoting the brand and everyone was pleased. While not the most glamorous project I’ve worked on, through this experience I was able to learn that in any capacity or industry, design has the power to connect and help people. Over the years the diversity of industries I’ve been able to help has ranged from mental health to tech education and much more.

A little bit more about my story...

Growing up I developed a love of art and drawing that laid my foundation to become a graphic designer. At the beginning of this journey, around 2011 it was all about the idea of “becoming a graphic designer.” When I was young and just learning about art I was told not to pursue a creative career by some family members. They reasoned that it would be more practical to pick a trade or work in the family cleaning business. My dreams felt shattered before they even started. While this was a painful experience, it didn’t stop me from painting, drawing, and creating. Eventually, I found graphic design and discovered I could make this my career and choose my path. What lay ahead of me was a path of education, full of challenges, that left me fulfilled with purpose.

After a few years of being enrolled at art college, I was able to understand what design does for our culture. Graphic design allowed me to use my creative abilities to visually communicate ideas for a viewer to absorb information. I had graduated from my usual art media and started experimenting using digital color, scale, texture, photography, and typography to convey these ideas. Design is a tool that can record history and reinterpret old ideas in new ways. Design not only creates culture but shapes our values and in turn determines our future. Sometimes I think about what the future of design will look like 50 years from now. With advancements in augmented and virtual reality technology, I’m excited to see how design ideas will be conveyed using new technology.

For a creative thinker like myself, the design industry has been a great career to push my imaginative boundaries. I’ve learned a lot on this journey from being an artistic-kid to a professional graphic designer. I found a passion and love for graphic design. As well as learned how important owning my story and truth is to my integrity as an artist. I hope that you can take inspiration away from this for your own life. Don’t settle for a life that you don’t choose even if there aren’t people rooting for you in your corner. There are always new opportunities to learn and new ways to have an outlook on life.
